Our 10-year workmanship guarantee

Every installation we carry out comes with a ten-year guarantee on our workmanship, given in writing. This page sets out what that covers and how to use it.

What it is

What does the guarantee actually promise?

That the installation work we carried out will be sound for ten years. It is a promise about our workmanship, given on paper.

When we fit a skylight or rooflight, we are responsible for how it is put in. That means the framing of the opening, the way the unit is fixed and sealed into the roof, the flashings or upstands we form, and the finish inside the room around it.

If something we did turns out to be wrong within ten years of the fitting, we put it right. That is the guarantee, and it applies to every installation.

In writing

It is not a verbal assurance. You receive it in writing with the rest of your paperwork, along with the quote and any Building Control notification details, so it stays with the house.

Why ten years

The weak points in a rooflight are rarely in the glass. They are where the unit meets the roof, and in how the opening was framed. Problems there tend to show up through seasons of rain, frost and sun, which is why we put the promise over a decade rather than a year or two.

What is covered

Which parts of the job does it cover?

The installation: how the opening was formed, how the unit was fixed and weathered into the roof, and the finishing around it.

Think of the guarantee as following our hands. Anything we built, fixed, sealed or finished is covered.

  • The structural trimming of the opening in the roof.
  • The fixing of the unit to the roof structure.
  • The weathering details where the unit meets the roof covering.
  • The lining and finishing inside the room.

When a replacement unit goes into an old opening, the same applies to the work we did in fitting it.

What is not

What falls outside it?

The manufacturer's own product warranty is separate, and so are misuse and anything changed by someone else after we leave.

A rooflight has two kinds of promise attached to it. We stand behind how it was installed. The manufacturer stands behind how the product was made, under its own warranty and its own terms. We pass that paperwork to you, but the claim is theirs to deal with.

Other exclusions

The guarantee does not cover damage from misuse, such as forcing an opening unit or walking on glass that was never designed to be walked on. It does not cover work done later by someone else, such as a new roof covering, an aerial fixed to the frame or a decorator's sealant on the joint. If another trade alters the area, we cannot know what they did.

These limits are ordinary, and we state them here so you can see them before you decide.

Making a claim

How do I make a claim?

Email or WhatsApp us with photos of the problem. We look at what you have sent and arrange a visit to the house.

Write to info@quaysideskylightsnewcastle.co.uk or message us on WhatsApp at 07880 284133. Say what you can see, where, and when you first noticed it, and attach photos of the room and, if one can be taken safely from the ground, of the outside.

What happens next

We read your message, then arrange a visit to look at the installation. If the cause lies in our workmanship, we put it right under the guarantee. If it lies elsewhere, for instance in the product or in later work by others, we tell you plainly and point you to who can help.

Either way, you will get an honest account of what we found. Nobody should be left guessing why a ceiling is damp or why a unit will not close.

Keep your guarantee with the deeds or the paperwork for the house. If you sell, it passes on with the paperwork. For the wider picture of a job, see how a quote works.

Guarantee details people ask for

Does the guarantee cost extra?

No. It is part of every installation we carry out, and it comes in writing with your paperwork. There is nothing to register and nothing to renew.

Who do I contact if the glass itself fails?

Start with us. We will look at the unit, and if the fault is in how the glass or frame was made, we help you take it to the manufacturer under its own warranty.
